STEM learning at scale using Microsoft Teams and AI for a more humanistic education

The University of New South Wales faced the challenge of delivering a highly engaging, personalized learning experience to a large and diverse student body, including around 500 students in a first-year engineering course. Traditional teaching models and learning systems were not well suited to creating collaboration, accessibility, and real-time interaction at this scale, especially for remote and on-campus learners.

Microsoft Corporation helped UNSW build a scalable learning community using Microsoft Teams, Azure, Microsoft 365, OneNote, Stream, Power BI, and AI tools. The solution enabled live digital inking, chat-based collaboration, AI-powered question handling, predictive analytics, and automated study packs and grading support. The result was a more connected, humanistic learning experience, with 100% of students saying they felt part of a learning community, over 99% course satisfaction, and an estimated 70% reduction in marker time for some grading tasks.
