Case Study: City of Gandía achieves major energy savings and lower emissions with Microsoft Azure

Spanish city goes green and cuts costs through cloud-based smart city initiatives

The City of Gandía wanted to improve quality of life and sustainability while reducing the high energy costs of its streetlight network. To address this challenge, the city worked with Wellness Telecom and used Microsoft Azure to support an IoT-based smart lighting initiative.

Microsoft Corporation helped enable the solution through Azure-connected LED light poles with remote monitoring and control. The result was a 66% reduction in annual energy consumption, 20% lower electricity bills, annual savings of about €400,000, and a 2,723-ton cut in CO2 emissions per year; the city also reported a 54.39% reduction in spending on street lighting and public buildings.
