Rio Tinto mines new frontiers of efficiency and agility in the cloud

Rio Tinto, one of the world’s largest mining companies, was under pressure to cut costs and improve agility amid volatile commodities prices and exchange rates. Working with Microsoft Corporation, and using Azure plus Microsoft 365 Enterprise, Rio Tinto set out to modernize its core systems and give its 55,000 employees secure mobile access to business information.

Microsoft Corporation helped Rio Tinto migrate its massive SAP estate to Azure and roll out cloud-based collaboration and security tools such as Azure Active Directory and Intune. The move delivered major results, including a 75-hour migration of 24 SAP applications and 35 TB of data, the retirement of four datacenters, and a 30% reduction in IT operating costs, while also speeding infrastructure delivery from weeks to clicks.
