Quorum doubles key database’s workload while lowering DTU by 70% with SQL Database

Quorum Business Solutions, Inc., an oil and gas software company, faced a significant challenge with its data-ingestion process on Microsoft Azure. Their multi-tenant Azure SQL Database was nearing its capacity from the constant stream of IoT data from thousands of wells, threatening service reliability and the ability to scale for new customers without incurring massive costs from upgrading tiers or switching platforms.

Microsoft provided the solution through a feature of its Azure SQL Database service: In-Memory OLTP. By implementing memory-optimized temporal tables and natively compiled stored procedures, Quorum was able to drastically reduce the database’s workload. This change resulted in a 70% reduction in Database Transaction Unit (DTU) consumption while simultaneously allowing the system to handle double the previous transaction volume, enabling rapid customer onboarding without a costly re-architecture.
