Politecnico di Milano needed a simple way to remotely monitor environmental conditions at the Mitreo, an ancient underground Roman site in Rome where direct access was limited. Working with Microsoft Corporation and its Azure IoT services, the university sought to track humidity, temperature, and other factors that could damage the site’s friezes and sculptures.

Microsoft Corporation implemented an end-to-end Azure solution using Azure IoT Hub, Azure Stream Analytics, Azure SQL Database, Azure App Service, and Power BI to collect, process, store, and visualize sensor data with minimal customization. The system quickly revealed dangerously high humidity and poor air circulation, prompting immediate preservation action; the solution was also designed to be secure, scalable, and reusable for future archeological sites.
