Pioneering insurance model automatically pays travelers for delayed flights

Swiss Re, a leading global reinsurance company based in Zurich, wanted to move beyond traditional insurance models and create a fully automated micro-insurance service for delayed flights. To do so, Swiss Re partnered with Microsoft Corporation and used Azure along with Azure API Management, Azure App Service, Azure SQL Database, and Visual Studio Team Services to build a scalable, cloud-based platform.

Microsoft Corporation helped Swiss Re launch the service in just eight months, with automated CI/CD and a highly scalable PaaS environment supporting millions of API requests each day. The solution automatically reimburses passengers, with most claims settled within an hour of landing, and has become a foundation for additional digital innovation across Swiss Re.
