Orthopedic hospital tests cloud-based cure for symptoms of rising healthcare costs

Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI), a specialty orthopedic hospital, faced the challenge of high healthcare costs and inefficient, manual processes for tracking surgical resources and implants. Their goal was to transition to a value-based healthcare system by understanding resource allocation but was hindered by error-prone paperwork and communication gaps between departments and vendors. They partnered with Microsoft Corporation, utilizing its Azure cloud platform and Surface devices, to implement a new surgical resource management solution.

The solution, ORHub, was developed by a partner on Microsoft Azure and used on Microsoft Surface devices in the operating room. This digitized the documentation process, automating manual tasks and providing real-time data analytics through Microsoft Power BI. The results included improved teamwork, more accurate implant records, and freed-up time for nursing staff to focus on patient care. HOI gained a better understanding of surgical costs and resource allocation, a critical first step toward achieving value-based care and the potential for significant nationwide cost savings.
