Case Study: TransAlta achieves faster, cost-saving decision validation with Microsoft Corporation PowerApps

A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Preview of the TransAlta Case Study

Multi-national energy company uses PowerApps to create a decision validation tool to minimize operational costs across its business

TransAlta, a Canadian multi-national power generation and energy trading company, needed a faster way to decide whether wind-turbine repairs should be dispatched immediately or deferred without hurting availability. Working with Microsoft Corporation, TransAlta used Microsoft PowerApps, Azure App Service, Azure Active Directory, and SharePoint Online to replace a manual, hard-to-code process with a cross-platform decision support tool.

Microsoft Corporation helped TransAlta build “Economic Callouts,” an app that analyzes 11 internal and external data sources to validate the economics of a callout, generate recommended actions, and keep an audit trail. The solution improved resource planning and decision-making, and TransAlta recovered the full cost of implementation within two weeks, delivering an immediate return on investment and reducing unnecessary callouts and operational costs.
