Case Study: MUFG achieves scalable, cost-efficient risk computing with Microsoft Corporation Azure

A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Preview of the MUFG Case Study

MUFG - Customer Case Study

MUFG, specifically Mitsubishi UFJ Securities International plc, faced growing pressure from post-2008 regulations to calculate and report complex daily risk numbers faster and at lower cost. Its on-premises HPC grid was becoming too expensive and hard to scale, with more than 100 GB of data to process in under 12 hours each night, and even more on weekends. Microsoft Corporation’s Azure cloud platform and Microsoft HPC Pack were used to help meet these demands.

Microsoft Corporation helped MUFG move its risk compute grids from on-premises infrastructure to Azure, using HPC Pack for deployment, scheduling, monitoring, and administration. The result was dramatic scale without added staff: one person could manage 750 Azure machines on weekdays, 1,000 on weekends, plus 300 on-prem machines, saving millions in servers and datacenter space while improving efficiency to about 97–98% and giving MUFG faster, more flexible compliance reporting.
