Mexican university uses open source platform on Microsoft cloud to drive innovation

The Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), a major Mexican educational institution, faced significant challenges with its on-premise IT infrastructure. Its open-source learning platform, Moodle, was unstable, performed poorly, and could not handle user demand, especially during critical events like admissions, leading to widespread complaints. To achieve greater flexibility and stability, the university partnered with Microsoft Corporation to migrate its systems to the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.

By implementing Microsoft Azure, UADY successfully moved its open-source applications, including Moodle, Apache, PHP, and MySQL, to the cloud. This solution provided the university with scalable computing power, enhanced security, and high availability without the need for expensive hardware; it avoided a server cost of approximately 400,000 Mexican pesos. The Microsoft solution stabilized the platform, enabling it to support up to 20,000 monthly users and 1,500 simultaneous users seamlessly, transforming user complaints into praise and driving academic innovation.
