MEO, the quadruple play telecommunications brand of Portugal Telecom in Portugal, faced the challenge of customer churn in a competitive market. Their subscribers were only accessing a small portion of available content, and their in-house video-on-demand recommendations engine was ineffective and placed a heavy burden on IT resources. To build loyalty, they needed to provide a personalized experience that helped customers easily discover new and relevant television content.

Microsoft provided a solution using its Azure cloud platform and Cortana Intelligence Suite. They implemented a hybrid infrastructure that used Azure Data Factory, HDInsight, and the Cognitive Services Recommendations API to process data and generate compelling content recommendations. The results were impressive, significantly improving the user experience and helping to build greater customer loyalty. The solution also allowed MEO to achieve a cost-effective balance between on-premises and cloud infrastructure while simplifying the management of its recommendation algorithms.
