Medical Center Trims Budget by $600,000 by Switching to Hyper-V Private Cloud

UConn Health, a healthcare provider and academic medical center, faced the challenge of high virtualization costs and an outdated infrastructure from its VMware environment. Seeking to significantly reduce operating expenses, it turned to vendor Microsoft Corporation and its Hyper-V and Windows Server technologies to modernize its data center while ensuring no downtime for critical clinical applications.

With assistance from Microsoft partner Infront Consulting Group, UConn Health migrated hundreds of virtual machines to a private cloud built on Microsoft's Hyper-V. The solution resulted in avoiding over $600,000 in VMware licensing fees over five years, halving the physical server count, and improving application availability. The Microsoft-based environment also enabled the IT staff to deliver new servers in hours instead of days.
