Mazda Gains Better Data Protection, 95 Percent Lower Costs Using Hybrid Cloud Storage

Mazda North American Operations, which supports nearly 700 dealerships, faced challenges with its outdated data protection system. Its tape-based backup process was slow, taking up to 24 hours for data restoration, and lacked reliable offsite disaster recovery for many of its applications and laptops. Seeking to improve reliability and free up its engineers from time-consuming tape management, Mazda turned to a hybrid cloud storage solution from Microsoft.

Microsoft provided a solution utilizing StorSimple appliances integrated with Microsoft Azure Storage. This system automated offsite backups with cloud snapshots, enabling data to be restored in minutes instead of days. The results for Mazda were significant: data protection costs were reduced by 95 percent due to deduplication and compression, engineers reclaimed 20 percent of their time previously spent on backups, and the company gained far more reliable and rapid disaster recovery capabilities.
