A Microsoft Corporation Case Study
Microsoft partnered with M-KOPA Solar, a large company in Kenya providing energy solutions, to address the challenge of delivering safe and affordable electricity across Africa. Many people were reliant on expensive and hazardous kerosene for power, and connectivity in rural areas was unreliable. M-KOPA needed a way to monitor and manage its solar systems remotely while understanding customer behavior.
The solution implemented by Microsoft leveraged Azure, including Azure Machine Learning and the Cortana Intelligence Suite, to remotely control equipment, predict maintenance issues, and enable a mobile pay-as-you-go payment system. This has provided a reliable and affordable kerosene-free lighting solution. As a result, M-KOPA has connected 500,000 homes to solar power, providing over 62.5 million hours of clean lighting per month and saving an estimated 600,000 tons of CO2 over four years.
