Microsoft Corporation worked with Kongsberg Maritime AS, a Norwegian maritime technology company, to address the challenge of optimizing port operations. The challenge was to move beyond isolated data collection and find a way to utilize real-time harbor depth information to enable safer navigation and maximize shipping loads for greater profitability.

The solution implemented by Microsoft utilized Azure IoT Hub to collect and funnel real-time berth depth data from multiple ports to the Azure cloud. This allowed Kongsberg to apply advanced analytics and machine learning to the larger dataset. Microsoft's solution unlocked the potential for logistics experts to predict conditions and optimize vessel loading, with each additional centimeter of draft enabling an additional 150 tons of cargo to be shipped, significantly increasing efficiency and safety.
