Case Study: Stealth Power achieves reduced fuel consumption and vehicle downtime with Microsoft Corporation Azure and Power BI

IoT solution helps keep emergency vehicles rolling on New York City’s busy streets

Stealth Power worked with the New York City Fire Department to solve a major challenge: reducing ambulance idling without shutting off critical onboard systems needed for emergency response. Using idle reduction technology running on Windows 10 IoT Core, the company helped keep communications, climate control, lights, and life-support equipment powered while improving fuel efficiency and lowering emissions.

Microsoft Corporation’s Azure and Power BI were then added to connect the vehicles to the cloud and deliver real-time and predictive insights on vehicle usage, engine performance, and fuel consumption. The solution was deployed on more than 300 ambulances, with over 60 connected to the IoT platform, helping FDNY cut idling, save fuel, reduce maintenance and downtime, and potentially save up to US$3 million in fuel costs while lowering CO2 emissions by more than 20 million pounds annually.
