Willis Towers Watson, a leading global provider of technology and consulting solutions for the insurance industry, faced the challenge of building a massive computational infrastructure to support disruptive usage-based insurance (UBI) for its clients. This required processing and analyzing highly granular, real-time driver data, a task that was cost-prohibitive and technically daunting for both the company and its customers. To address this, they turned to vendor Microsoft Corporation and its Microsoft Azure cloud services.

The solution implemented by Microsoft involved a hybrid cloud architecture using Azure Table Storage and Azure Cloud Services worker roles to elastically scale the UBI analytics platform. By leveraging Microsoft Azure, Willis Towers Watson projects savings of 30 to 40 percent in capital and operating costs, while also gaining the competitive advantage of being able to offer its sophisticated, cost-effective UBI solution to a broader market of insurers.
