Innovative Utility Deploys Smart Streetlights as Digital Service Stations for the City of the Future

EnBW, a major German utility company, faced the challenge of transforming its traditional business model to compete in a changing energy market. To create new revenue streams and build better community relationships, it sought to develop innovative digital services, moving beyond simply providing power, gas, and water.

The solution was developed using the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, including Azure IoT Suite and Cortana Intelligence Suite. Microsoft Services helped EnBW build SM!GHT, a smart streetlight system that functions as a digital service hub for collecting environmental data, providing EV charging, and enabling public Wi-Fi. This Microsoft-powered solution has been adopted by approximately 50 cities, generating international interest and providing municipalities with valuable data to improve urban planning and security.
