A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Preview of the Poole Hospital Case Study

Hospital uses wearable device to create new healthcare reality for people with epilepsy

Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a UK healthcare provider, sought to improve epilepsy treatment by overcoming the challenge of relying on subjective patient reports and lengthy, costly processes for managing this complex condition. Partnering with Microsoft Corporation and other alliance members, they aimed to develop a data-driven solution using wearable technology to gain objective insights into patient health.

The solution, built by partners using the Microsoft Band and the Microsoft Health and HealthVault platforms, collected continuous physiological and patient-reported data. Microsoft Azure Machine Learning was used to analyze this data to identify seizure patterns and risk factors. This provided clinicians with an objective, comprehensive view of each patient, enabling more timely and effective, personalized treatment plans, reducing the need for unnecessary appointments, and ultimately aiming to deliver better care at a lower cost.
