Hôpital Montfort, a Canadian academic hospital, faced the challenge of reducing unnecessary medical tests as part of the Choosing Wisely Canada initiative. Its initial efforts to change physician ordering habits through meetings were ineffective because the data provided was not specific, real-time, or interactive enough to drive change. The hospital needed a solution to empower its physicians with evidence to make wiser clinical decisions.

Microsoft implemented a solution using its Power BI analytics service. This provided physicians with interactive, real-time dashboards to analyze their own lab test ordering data, which was securely accessed through an on-premises gateway. The results were dramatic; within 30 days, lab test ordering patterns shifted significantly. Most notably, the emergency department reduced its lab utilization by 30% with no negative impact on patient care, saving resources and aligning practices with clinical best practices.
