Honeywell builds microservices-based thermostats on Azure

Honeywell International Inc. needed to modernize its connected thermostat platform and move beyond a monolithic, on-premises IoT architecture. Working with Microsoft Corporation and Azure services such as Azure IoT Hub, Azure Cloud Services, and Azure Service Fabric, Honeywell sought a more scalable microservices approach for its Lyric smart home solution.

Microsoft Corporation helped Honeywell migrate the system to Service Fabric with a prototype and a new architecture built around Reliable Actors, Azure Resource Manager templates, and automated deployment. The result was a much leaner and more stable platform, cutting infrastructure from 48 virtual machines to 15, improving performance with 99% of scale unit calls completing within 40 ms, and reducing outages while enabling smoother CI/CD and easier scaling.
