Georgia Tech Students Gain Broad Access to Powerful Design Software with Virtualization

The Georgia Institute of Technology, a top-ranked public university, faced a challenge providing its engineering students with remote access to powerful, graphics-intensive design software, as the existing virtual desktop infrastructure was insufficient and costly. To overcome this, the university partnered with Microsoft Corporation to leverage the enhanced Remote Desktop Services and Hyper-V technology in Windows Server 2012.

The solution from Microsoft Corporation utilized the RemoteFX feature to virtualize the high-performance applications, allowing students to access them from anywhere on a variety of devices. This implementation resulted in a 50 percent increase in virtual machine density, a significant reduction in cost per seat, and lower power consumption, ultimately providing students with flexible, anytime access to their essential software.
