From talking in class to collaborating in class – Toda Higashi Elementary School reforms the way it teaches

Toda Higashi Elementary School in Japan faced the challenge of moving beyond teacher-led lessons toward independent, interactive, and deep learning as part of broader education reforms. To support this shift, the school introduced an ICT environment with Microsoft Corporation’s Office 365 Education, using tools such as Microsoft Teams and OneNote to help students in grades 5 and 6 build communication and collaboration skills.

Microsoft Corporation helped implement collaborative learning practices through workshops and classroom use of Teams and OneNote, enabling students to share ideas in real time, organize thoughts, and create group work together. The results included more active discussions, stronger student collaboration, lighter teacher workload, and more efficient lesson delivery; teachers could also track progress digitally and provide more individualized support.
