Family History Site Reduces Server Count and Costs, Boosts Agility with Private Cloud

Ancestry, the world’s largest online family history resource, was struggling with server sprawl, rising data center costs, and slow IT service delivery as its business and data volumes grew. To support millions of subscribers and daily searches, the company needed a more scalable and agile infrastructure, and it chose Microsoft Corporation solutions including Hyper-V in Windows Server and Microsoft System Center.

Microsoft Corporation helped Ancestry build a private cloud and migrate virtual machines to Hyper-V, while System Center automated deployment, monitoring, and management. The result was a reduction of about 4,000 physical servers and a cut in server count and costs by roughly half, with servers now provisioned in 30 minutes instead of weeks and growth supported without adding significant IT staff.
