Transport for London wanted a low-cost way to improve customer service and operate its Emirates Air Line cable car more efficiently. Working with Microsoft Corporation and its Azure IoT Hub, Azure Functions, Azure Stream Analytics, and related services, the organization sought to provide free Wi‑Fi for passengers while also gathering operational data from cabins and stations.

Microsoft Corporation helped Transport for London implement an IoT solution using TV White Spaces, LoRaWAN sensors, and Azure services to monitor network quality, count pedestrians, and track temperature and humidity. The result was free onboard Wi‑Fi, real-time instrumentation across the cable car system, and more accurate operational insights to support predictive maintenance, improve service availability, and reduce costs.
