Developers at Avatarion Deploy Robots to Entertain Lonely Children in Hospitals

Avatarion Technology AG, a small Swiss health provider, created “Avatar Kids” to help hospitalized children and teens stay connected to home and school during long stays. The company’s pilot had already reached six hospitals and 25 robots, but it lacked telemetry, remote interaction, and visibility into robot usage, errors, battery status, and location. Avatarion Technology turned to Microsoft Corporation, using Azure IoT Hub and related Azure services to address these gaps.

Microsoft Corporation implemented Azure IoT Hub to securely collect data from the robots and decouple ingestion from storage and analysis, simplifying maintenance and avoiding custom infrastructure. The solution enabled near-real-time monitoring and provided the data foundation for predictive maintenance, helping reduce the risk of hardware failure from overheating motors. Avatarion is also exploring Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and Microsoft Cognitive Services to expand robot capabilities, with measurable progress already seen in the growing pilot deployment across hospitals.
