Case Study: Mecklenburg County saves millions and improves public services with Microsoft Azure and Office 365

A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Preview of the Mecklenburg County Case Study

County Uses Technology to Save Millions of Dollars, Improve Services, and Empower Youth

Mecklenburg County sought to improve the efficiency of its highly mobile workforce and provide better services to its nearly one million residents. The county's IT team, with support from Microsoft Corporation, aimed to adopt technology that would allow employees to work securely from the field, reduce operational costs, and empower local youth with valuable skills.

Microsoft provided a solution centered on migrating to Microsoft Office 365 and deploying Microsoft Surface Pro tablets, which gave employees cloud-based access to productivity tools from any location. This was complemented by leveraging the Microsoft Azure platform for data storage and disaster recovery. The results were significant, including an estimated $3.2 million in annual productivity savings for social workers, $500,000 in reduced infrastructure costs with Azure, and improved data security. Additionally, through the Microsoft CityNext and YouthSpark initiatives, the county and city of Charlotte were able to offer career development programs that provided local youth with hands-on technology experience.
