Connecting street lights in Taipei saves money, boosts safety

The City of Taipei needed a smarter way to manage more than 150,000 street lights while cutting costs and improving public safety. Manual, reactive maintenance was labor-intensive and often left streets dark until outages were reported, so the city turned to Microsoft Corporation partner AAEON and its Azure-based IoT lighting solution.

Microsoft Corporation helped AAEON implement the AAEON Lighting Control System on an initial pilot of 3,000 street lights, using Azure and Azure IoT Hub for secure, near real-time monitoring and analytics. The solution enabled predictive and preventive maintenance, optimized lighting schedules for safety, reduced patrols and maintenance costs, and supported lower energy use and emissions, with Taipei already planning to expand its connected-city capabilities.
