A Microsoft Corporation Case Study
The City of Seattle, a major U.S. municipality, faced the challenge of meeting its growing energy needs without building new power plants. It sought to significantly reduce downtown power consumption through a smarter, more efficient approach. To achieve this, the city partnered with Microsoft and used its software and cloud services, including Windows Azure, SQL Server 2012, and SharePoint Server 2013, as part of a broader Smart Building initiative.
Microsoft, working with implementation partner Accenture, provided a cloud-based solution that applied predictive analytics to data from existing building management systems. This allowed for real-time equipment adjustments to optimize energy use. The solution was projected to reduce energy and maintenance costs by 10 to 25 percent for large commercial buildings, while also opening new economic opportunities for the region's clean technology sector.
