A Microsoft Corporation Case Study
The City of Kiruna in Sweden faced the extraordinary challenge of relocating its entire city 3 kilometers east because mining activity beneath it was destabilizing the ground. To plan the move and protect underground infrastructure, the city partnered with Microsoft Corporation, using Azure and HoloLens through a proof-of-concept solution called Hidden City.
Microsoft Corporation helped enable an augmented-reality system that combined GPS, GIS, IoT, and infrastructure data so planners and maintenance teams could visualize pipes, soil conditions, and other buried assets in 3D. The solution improved city planning and maintenance, giving users “X-ray vision” into underground structures, speeding up repairs, reducing excavation risk and disruption, and supporting Kiruna’s goal of building a smarter, more sustainable city.
