Case Study: WWF Greece achieves reliable urban green space engagement with Microsoft Azure

Citizens take urban greenery into their own hands

WWF Hellas, the Greek office of the global environmental organization WWF, needed a reliable and scalable platform to host its GreenSpaces app. This crowdsourcing application allows citizens to map, rate, and suggest improvements for urban green spaces, but its usage spiked during peak times like weekends, requiring robust infrastructure to ensure seamless performance. They turned to Microsoft Corporation and its Microsoft Azure cloud platform to meet this challenge.

By hosting the GreenSpaces app on Microsoft Azure, WWF gained a stable and reliable infrastructure capable of handling significant, periodic increases in user demand. This solution provided citizens uninterrupted access to engage with urban greenery from their devices. The result is a highly utilized tool with 945 registered green spaces across 109 Greek cities and thousands of app downloads, successfully encouraging widespread public participation in environmental management.
