A Microsoft Corporation Case Study
CGG, a French geoscience leader in the energy sector, needed to prove that its compute-intensive reservoir modeling and 3D interpretation software could run faster and more cost-effectively in the cloud. Working with Microsoft Corporation and Azure HPC services, including Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets, and Azure Storage, CGG tested whether applications like Jason RockMod and InsightEarth could match or exceed on-premises performance.
Microsoft Corporation and CGG implemented Azure-based HPC and GPU-optimized virtual machines to distribute simulations and support collaborative visualization. The solution delivered strong benchmark results: 30 RockMod realizations completed in just over 12 hours at scale, and InsightEarth performed better on an ND-series VM with improved memory and newer GPUs. Based on these results, the oil and gas customer moved its CGG application workload to Azure, gaining better scalability and lower cost than its on-premises environment.
