Case Study: Carnival Maritime improves water efficiency and explores predictive maintenance with Microsoft Azure and Cortana Intelligence Suite

A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Preview of the Carnival Maritime Case Study

Carnival Maritime is testing the waters with machine learning in the Cortana Intelligence Suite

Carnival Maritime, the marine service unit of the Costa Group, faced the challenge of utilizing the vast amount of sensor data from its fleet of 26 cruise ships to improve operational efficiency and sustainability. They sought a partner with expertise in big data to help them understand and leverage this information. They engaged Arundo, a provider of analytical solutions, to conduct a test case using the Microsoft Azure cloud platform and its Cortana Intelligence Suite.

Arundo built a solution on Microsoft Azure, using its machine learning capabilities to analyze historical and real-time data to accurately predict ship water consumption. This allowed Carnival Maritime to optimize water production at sea, reducing the need to bunker water. The solution is projected to save each ship over $200,000 annually and lower CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the Azure-based platform enables future applications like predictive maintenance for ship equipment.
