Capita Reading Cloud migrates 10,000 databases and finds new scalability with Azure

Capita Reading Cloud, part of Capita, needed a more scalable and reliable way to run its library management service for more than 8,500 school libraries across the UK. Its Microsoft SQL Server databases on third-party hosting couldn’t quickly handle demand spikes or provide the backup recovery and operational efficiency the team needed.

Microsoft Corporation helped Capita migrate 10,000 databases to Azure SQL Database using Azure Database Migration Service and elastic database pools. The move cut manual management work, enabled automatic scaling and five-minute backups, and reduced monitoring costs by about £3,000 per month, while allowing one person to complete a migration that might otherwise have required a 10-person team.
