Becton Dickinson Pioneers Cloud-based SAP Training Environment

Becton Dickinson, a major global medical technology company, faced the challenge of modernizing its rigid and costly on-premises SAP training environment. The legacy system was expensive to maintain and could not be easily scaled to train employees quickly on new procedures. Seeking flexibility and scalability while meeting strict healthcare data security regulations like HIPAA, BD turned to its partner, Microsoft Corporation, to pioneer a cloud-based solution using Microsoft Azure.

Microsoft implemented a solution by migrating BD’s complex 20TB SAP environment, including 25 major systems, to the Azure cloud. This move to a virtualized environment enabled BD to create dynamic training "classrooms" on demand. The results were significant: environment refresh times were reduced from six weeks to just three weeks, requiring only three staff instead of sixteen. Performance improved dramatically, and the shift to a pay-as-you-go model drove cost efficiency and operational discipline for BD. Microsoft's support was crucial in navigating the technical and security challenges of this pioneering migration.
