BD Develops Connected Health Vision, Envisions New Solutions with Strategic Consultation

Becton Dickinson (BD), a global manufacturer of medical devices, sought to transform healthcare through connected devices and data. Their challenge was to evolve from a product-focused company to one that leverages the Internet of Things, enabling their devices to share data to improve patient care. BD needed a secure, cost-effective cloud solution and a more agile, software-driven development process to achieve this vision without the massive expense of building their own infrastructure. They partnered with Microsoft to help define and deploy this new strategy.

Microsoft provided strategic consultation and its Azure cloud platform to help BD become more agile and entrepreneurial. The solution enabled secure, HIPAA-compliant data transmission from devices like the BD Veritor flu scanner to the cloud for analysis. This partnership saved BD millions of dollars and over a year in development time for their first connected product. Microsoft's guidance also doubled operational efficiency, saving an estimated half of their operational costs, and prepared BD to efficiently integrate another company after an acquisition.
