Case Study: City of Antwerp achieves smarter, less congested mobility with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Antwerp deploys bespoke mobility platform, reducing congestion and nearing sustainable mobility solutions

The City of Antwerp faced severe congestion from ongoing roadworks and rising traffic, with city officials estimating that 20,000 vehicles needed to be taken off the roads each day to ease delays. To address this, the city worked with Microsoft Corporation partner Be-Mobile and used Microsoft Azure to build Smart Ways to Antwerp, a bespoke mobility platform that combined multiple transport data sources into one intermodal routing system.

Microsoft Corporation’s Azure-based solution delivered real-time route guidance, parking information, and alternative travel options such as public transit, bike, scooter, and car sharing. The impact was significant: car commuting fell by almost 10% versus 2010, 14,000 fewer cars entered the city center on an average working day compared with 2017, and the app was downloaded nearly 15,000 times, helping improve traffic flow and encourage more sustainable mobility.
