Xbox One Game DVR Uses the Cloud to Scale, Store, and Distribute User Video Game Clips

Microsoft’s Xbox team introduced Xbox One Game DVR to let players capture and share gameplay clips, but needed a way to make those videos quickly and reliably available across consoles and devices. Local storage and slow downloads disrupted the experience, so the team required a scalable, secure cloud solution to store, transcode, and distribute large volumes of user content worldwide.

In November 2013 the team implemented Microsoft Azure Media Services and Azure Cloud Storage to transcode once and deliver clips in multiple formats (Flash, Android, iOS, Windows), use progressive downloads, and store content across global regions. The pay‑as‑you‑go solution stores 800+ TB, was implemented in about six months, supports hundreds of concurrent encoding jobs, has processed over 1 million encoding jobs, delivers 99.99% availability, and has enabled millions of clips to be streamed and shared seamlessly.
