University of North Carolina at Charlotte uses Azure PaaS to bootstrap an EV charging solution

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) needed a cheaper, less disruptive way to expand EV charging without installing costly new stations. Working with Microsoft Azure and Eaton, the team set out to retrofit streetlights into smart charging stations as part of Project PoleVolt.

Microsoft Azure helped the university build the solution with Azure IoT Hub, Stream Analytics, App Service, Cosmos DB, and other Azure PaaS tools. The team reached a minimum viable product in about six months, created a scalable architecture for field deployment, and prepared the first stations for rollout on campus and later in Charlotte.
