A Microsoft Azure Case Study
Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), Ukraine’s flagship carrier, needed to make its public website reliably serve more than a million monthly visitors and support international growth. The site—built on open-source technologies (MODX, PHP, MySQL, CentOS)—was suffering severe denial-of-service attacks, poor performance, and limited global reach, preventing the airline from expanding into markets like the US and China.
Working with Comparex Ukraine, UIA migrated flyuia.com to Microsoft Azure using a mix of Azure App Service, VMs, Storage, Backup, and Virtual Network. The move eliminated DOS attacks, doubled site performance (up to 200%), improved reliability and scalability for peak traffic, increased US traffic by 16%, and cut operating costs by about $2,000 a month—enabling UIA’s global expansion.
