Case Study: Munich Re achieves 1,000x more data and rapid weather-risk analysis with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Munich Re Case Study

The most innovative analysis of weather risks

Munich Re, a global reinsurance leader, has tracked natural disasters and climate data for decades to model weather risks. Its sophisticated predictive models require processing massive satellite and internal datasets, but on-premises infrastructure made analyses slow and costly—single scenarios could take hours—limiting experimentation and insight.

By migrating core workloads to Microsoft Azure (including VMs, storage, Azure Machine Learning and related services), Munich Re scaled compute and storage on demand and adopted in‑memory processing. Scenario runtimes dropped from hours to seconds, the Data Analytics team now handles roughly 3 PB of data (about 1,000× growth), and model iteration accelerated (10,000 loops in hours), enabling broader interdisciplinary use, new analytics on unstructured data, and expanded business opportunities to better assess and mitigate climate risk.
