The Microsoft Cloud Helps Rainforest Alliance Protect the Earth’s Forests

Rainforest Alliance is a global nonprofit that protects forests and promotes sustainable farming through its Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal. To ensure that cocoa is responsibly produced and traceable from smallholder farms to chocolate manufacturers, the organization faced the challenge of integrating complex, real-time supply-chain data across multiple countries while reducing IT costs and supporting a distributed workforce.

By running its traceability platform and data warehouse on the Microsoft Cloud—including Azure, Azure SQL, Dynamics (CRM/Dynamics 365), Office 365 and Yammer—Rainforest Alliance centralized data touchpoints, validated volumes at each handoff, and gave staff worldwide real-time access to large datasets at lower cost. The solution improved chain-of-custody traceability, strengthened certification processes, connected farmers to global markets, and helped increase farmer incomes while protecting tropical forests.
