Case Study: Tencent Games achieves reduced PC-game install size and seamless cloud microservice updates with Microsoft Azure Service Fabric

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Tencent Case Study

Tencent Games and Microsoft build the cloud game solution

Tencent Games partnered with Microsoft to modernize PC gaming amid rising mobile competition and heavy client-side installs. Faced with GB‑scale downloads, frequent updates and a legacy client‑server model, Tencent needed to shrink installation size, deliver parts of the client as services, and adopt a service‑oriented operations model to keep user experience equal or better.

Using Microsoft Service Fabric and Windows Server, Tencent moved core client functions to server‑side microservices, leaving a thin client for rendering and control. The result: install packages reduced from GBs to MBs, seamless play‑as‑you‑go updates, faster deployments and agile development, cross‑region scale on cloud or on‑prem clusters, lower maintenance and user‑acquisition costs, and a consistently improved player experience.
