Telemedicine solution improves health outcomes by connecting remote patients with specialists

swyMed, a Lexington, Massachusetts–based telemedicine startup, set out to bring specialist care to patients in remote and mobile settings where time-sensitive conditions such as stroke require immediate assessment. The company faced the challenge of delivering uninterrupted, high-quality video and secure data transmission over fluctuating 3G and low-bandwidth networks—often from ambulances, rural sites, or homes—and needed a lightweight, easy-to-use device that clinicians could deploy quickly in the field.

swyMed built a Windows-based videoconferencing solution using Microsoft Visual Studio and Azure and standardized on Microsoft Surface Pro tablets installed in a rugged, digitally enabled telemedicine backpack with redundant dual-modem connectivity, AC Wave 2 Wi‑Fi, HD cameras, and long battery life. The HIPAA-compliant system integrates with major EHRs, enables remote specialist evaluation that speeds treatment decisions, has reduced per-ambulance setup costs (about $12,500 versus up to $50,000 for some competitors), and has received positive feedback from physicians for improving outcomes and lowering downstream care costs.
