Supporting refugees and reuniting families through the cloud

SOS Children’s Villages International, a nonprofit working in 135 countries to protect children and families from refugees to the disabled, faced the dual challenge of safeguarding extremely sensitive personal data and operating in conflict-affected, low-infrastructure environments. They also needed fast ways to connect staff across borders, reunite unaccompanied children with families, mobilize emergency responders, and maintain trust with donors.

By adopting Microsoft cloud services—Azure and Office 365 tools like OneDrive, SharePoint, and Skype for Business—SOS secured data while enabling safe, anywhere access, real-time collaboration, an e-roster for rapid deployments, MediaBox for global media sharing, and ICT corners for refugees. The result: stronger data protection, quicker family reunifications and emergency responses, improved remote counseling and field operations, and faster, more transparent fundraising (for example, raising funds for a child’s surgery within two days).
