The Festival Internacional Cervantino (FIC), produced by Mexico’s Ministry of Culture (Conaculta), is one of Latin America’s largest performing-arts events. For 2010 the festival needed an affordable, flexible website to deliver on-demand videos and live streams, handle user uploads and contests, and scale to huge, unpredictable traffic spikes—all on a tight budget and deadline.

Working with partner emLink, FIC rebuilt its site on Microsoft Azure using Silverlight, SQL Azure, Blob Storage, the Azure CDN, Bing Maps, Photosynth, Microsoft Tag and SharePoint for press. The cloud solution delivered automatic scalability and reliable high‑bandwidth streaming, a much better visitor experience, and major cost savings (about 64% over three years), with 390,000 festival visitors in 2010, 102,000 VOD viewers, and traffic from 97 countries.
