Case Study: Quantum Technologies achieves rapid development and scalable "moon in your hand" AR experience with Microsoft Azure

A Microsoft Azure Case Study

Preview of the Quantum Technologies Case Study

Startup uses .NET Core cross-platform development to put the moon in your hands

Quantum Technologies (doing business as AstroReality) is a small startup that set out to create the most accurate handheld lunar model and an augmented‑reality mobile app (LUNAR) that links billions of NASA data points to a physical 3D print. The challenge was processing and serving massive datasets, integrating advanced AR features, and doing it quickly and affordably with a small, distributed team and limited funding.

The company built its back end with cross‑platform .NET Core and hosted services on Microsoft Azure—using Azure App Service, Azure SQL Database, Azure Storage, and Azure Redis Cache—while the mobile front end was developed in Unity 3D. Two engineers delivered the LUNAR and AstroReality cloud app in four months, reducing development time and cost, and giving the startup instant scalability and confidence to expand the platform to future planetary models.
