Startup develops advanced diagnostic imaging solutions at scale using Microsoft Azure

Combinostics, a Tampere, Finland–based startup founded in 2014, builds cNeuro — advanced quantitative tools to improve diagnosis of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s by extracting biomarkers from brain images. The company faced the dual challenge of high variability and limited sensitivity in visual radiology assessments and the need to process and validate large imaging datasets at scale despite limited startup resources for on-premises infrastructure.

Combinostics moved its processing to Microsoft Azure, using Azure Batch with Autoscale to spin up hundreds of virtual machines for parallel image analysis on demand. This cloud-based approach cut validation and testing times from weeks to hours, reduced orchestration overhead and costs through pay-as-you-go scaling, and enabled delivery of web-based tools that quantify brain volumes, cortical parcellations and vascular burden — improving diagnostic consistency and speeding customer workflows.
