A Microsoft Azure Case Study
Skanska USA, a large construction and development firm with about 9,600 employees, needed a reliable way to monitor and report environmental conditions across hundreds of jobsites to meet client and regulatory requirements. Its previous wall-mounted sensors and an early version of inSite Monitor were unreliable, lacked reporting and real-time alerts, and were difficult to maintain, so the company sought a scalable, near-real-time monitoring solution for compliance, transparency, and operational efficiency.
Skanska rebuilt inSite Monitor 2.0 on Microsoft Azure, integrating Extech sensors with Azure Service Bus, Table Storage, Cloud Services, Azure SQL Database and a .NET backend that powers a web dashboard and iOS app with push alerts via Notification Hubs. The cloud-based system provides near-real-time site data, faster detection and remediation of issues, verifiable compliance for clients (especially hospitals), operational cost savings, improved transparency, and a competitive differentiator deployed on multiple U.S. jobsites.
