SAP on Azure ‘a real cost-saver’ for major South African government body

Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), the legislative arm of South Africa’s Gauteng province in Johannesburg, relies on SAP to manage core legislative and administrative functions. Facing a required hardware upgrade for its SAP environment amid tight public-sector budgets, GPL sought a faster, more cost-effective way to support development, testing and production workloads as part of its digital transformation.

Working with Microsoft partner Gijima, GPL migrated its SAP estate to Microsoft Azure after a successful proof of concept. The cloud-based setup let the team provision SAP development and test environments in hours, run BI tools with no latency issues, and de-provision unused workloads—delivering an estimated saving of 1 million Rand (about $70,000) while optimizing operations and reducing procurement delays.
